Dunhida Falls
Dunhinda Falls is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic waterfalls, located near the town of Badulla in the island’s eastern region. Known for its stunning beauty, Dunhinda Falls is approximately 64 meters high and features a misty spray that gives it the name “Dunhinda,“meaning “mist smoke” in Sinhalese. The mist is created by the powerful force of the water as it cascades down the rocks, offering visitors a spectacular view.
To reach the falls, visitors embark on a scenic 1 km hike through lush tropical forest, where the path is surrounded by greenery, ferns, and trees. The journey through the jungle is peaceful, and the closer you get to the falls, the more intense the sound of rushing water becomes. The final viewpoint is mesmerizing, as the waterfall drops dramatically over the rocky terrain, and the mist rising from the base often forms rainbows, creating an almost magical atmosphere.
Dunhinda Falls is located around 5 km from Badulla, with a 20-minute drive to the trailhead. The trail itself is short but beautiful, suitable for most visitors, making it an easy yet rewarding experience for nature lovers. While the waterfall is stunning throughout the year, it is particularly breathtaking during the dry season (from December to April), when the weather is perfect for the hike, and the mist is more pronounced.
Visiting Dunhinda Falls is an opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s pristine natural beauty. It offers a tranquil escape, far from the bustle of city life, and is one of the most picturesque spots in the Badulla District. Whether you’re a photographer, nature enthusiast, or simply seeking serenity, Dunhinda Falls provides an unforgettable experience in the heart of Sri Lanka’s lush highlands.
